Tanner Turns Five

Tanner turned five on April 8 this year. I suppose I'm old enough to have a five-year old by now. Though it seems I've had him much longer than five years. Did I ever NOT have him? Surely not. I distinctly remember taking him to grade school with me. Well, maybe not.

I remember how much fun it was---having just my one little Tanner to play with and take care of and talk to and take naps with while Daddy was busy with school and work.

As I look back on the last five years, it strikes me that these have been the absolute happiest of my life. I'm tempted to say they've been the hardest, too, but maybe that's because I don't remember high school as I should. Raising Tanner, so far, has tested my patience and ingenuity far greater than any previous life experiences did. He can be a real stinker.

But he can also be unbelievably sweet and cute. Tanner's true love has been his yellow duck, cleverly named "Duckie." Duckie used to accompany Tanner on every single outing. And Tanner's blanket. He's mostly outgrown those, but he still sleeps with Duckie ever night and occasionally asks if he can take her to church with him.

I wish I could say he's a perfect big brother for little Kevin. He tries sometimes.

We got him a Lightning McQueen tricycle when he turned 3. He loved that bike---even after Rob ran over its back wheel, leaving it forever rickety and squeaky but adding volumes to its charm.

For little Amy, however, Tanner has been an awesome big brother. He shares treats with her in the car, gets her out of her crib after her naps, plays with her, and talks sweetly to her. There has always been a special bond between those two. (Yes, that rutabaga squirming there is Amy.)

We got him a new bike this year, a real "big boy" bike. He loves it and wants nothing more than to ride it always. He is a wee bit put out that the weather has been wretched since his birthday.

Happy Birthday, Tanner! We love you!!!

(Rob put six candles on the cake against my wishes. I believe it will confuse us for years to come.)

Have I told you I love your blog? What a great tribute to Tanner! Happy Birthday Tanner! (Just so you know, I put an extra candle on every cake too, "to grow on". It must be a Chase thing.)

Happy Birthday Tanner! I too remember him as a wee one. We enjoyed having Tanner come over and play with us. We still say "tanner-isms" such as "moh-moh milk". I can't remember the other one we always say, but anyway, we sure love Tanner! Happy Birthday!
